Why re-foldering 50,000 photos fails

Sorting 50,000 photos into folders by hand means making 50,000 decisions. At two seconds per photo that is 28 hours of pure clicking, before you hit the hard cases: which folder gets the shot of the kids at grandma's birthday, the person, the event or the year?

Folder trees also answer only one question, the one you sorted by. File by year and you lose people. File by event and you lose places. The way out is to stop treating folders as the index. Leave the files where they are and let software find them by content.

Step 1

Gather your sources

List where the photos actually live: the Pictures folder on your Mac, the phone backup folders, the external drives in the drawer, the NAS share. You do not need to merge them. You only need to be able to plug each one in once.

PhotoCore reads JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, WebP, GIF and BMP, so mixed sources from old phones, cameras and scanners all land in the same index.

Step 2

Index once, in place, read-only

Point PhotoCore at each source and let it index. There is no import step: files stay exactly where they are, and indexing is read-only. PhotoCore computes a 768-dimension embedding per image with SigLIP 2 via Core ML on the Apple Neural Engine, and stores it in a local SQLite database.

External drives only need to be connected during indexing. Afterwards, search keeps working with the drive unplugged, and each result tells you which drive holds the original.

Step 3

Search by meaning instead of moving files

Type what you remember: "kids in the snow", "birthday cake in the garden", "red car in front of the house". PhotoCore matches the description against image content, in more than 100 languages, and returns results ranked by similarity. No tags, no keywords, no folder names required.

Step 4

Name the people who matter, once

Turn on face recognition (it is off by default) and define the people you care about from a few clear sample shots each. From then on, every photo of them across all 50,000 becomes searchable with an @mention: "@anna at the beach", "@luca graduation".

Step 5

Use the map for trips and the calendar for periods

Photos with GPS coordinates appear as pins on an Apple Maps view, grouped by place. Click a pin to open the shots from that trip. Photos without GPS simply skip the map and stay findable by description or date.

The calendar date-range filter narrows any view to exact days. "The week of the move" or "Christmas 2018" stops being a scrolling session and becomes two clicks.

Step 6

Let AI rename the cryptic filenames

IMG_2841.HEIC tells you nothing. PhotoCore's AI rename generates descriptive filenames from image content with a local model, so the files themselves become readable in Finder and in backups. An optional remote endpoint is available if you prefer it, with the key stored in the macOS Keychain.

Rename only runs on the files you select, when you ask for it. The rest of your archive stays untouched.

Step 7

Optional: see the archive as groups with Constellation

Constellation clusters your indexed photos by visual similarity and lays them out as groups, so you can see the shape of the archive: the trips, the birthdays, the screenshots, the food photos. It is a good way to rediscover what 50,000 files actually contain without opening a single folder.

Do I need to sort my photos into folders first?
No. PhotoCore indexes your folders exactly as they are, in place and read-only. Messy folder names do not matter, because you search by what is in the photo.
Can PhotoCore index external drives and a NAS?
Yes. Index each drive or share once. The embeddings live in a local SQLite database on your Mac, so search keeps working even when the drive is unplugged.
Does PhotoCore move or change my files?
