How to search disconnected hard drives

Can you search a drive that is not connected
By itself, no. The operating system cannot read files on a disk that is not present. The trick is to build an index while the drive is connected, then search that index later. The index is small and stays on your Mac, so it is always available.
For photos this matters even more, because a single archive often spans several disks that are rarely all connected at once.
