The short version
PhotoCore 1.8: select, compare, pick
Version 1.8 (August 2026) adds Compare: two to four shots opened side by side above the gallery, with synced zoom and pan, a quality score computed from sharpness, exposure and faces on every pane, and a Pick the user sets with the 1 to 4 keys. The gallery itself now behaves like Finder: range selection with shift-click, cmd-A and Esc, arrow keys that move the selection, and the space bar for Quick Look. Reveal in Finder highlights every selected photo, and folders can be dropped from the recents list even when their drive is disconnected. Full release notes: What’s new in 1.8.
Three things to know
Own it once
One payment: $29.99 until September 15, 2026, then $59.99. The archive, the index and every Story belong to the user, on hardware they own. No subscription, no rented storage.
Nothing leaves the Mac
Apple lists the app as “Data Not Collected”. Indexing, semantic search, face analysis and Stories run on device. After setup, core search works with Wi-Fi off.
The drive in the drawer stays searchable
Index a drive once and it stays searchable while unplugged: previews, paths and the semantic index remain on the Mac. Reconnect only to open the original file.
